Thames Borough Council.

I .The usual fortnightly meeting of the | Council was held at the Council Chambers jlasfc evening. Present: Cra Ehrenfried ! (in the chair), Wilson, Mennie, KcGowan land Hansen.

/iThf/minu^Bs of previous meeting were read and connrmed,:^^!^ l/,~i iii~;G The heads of correspondence, outward since last meeting was read over.

WATBB SUPPLY, j ,\ <; A letter was read from the"secretary to' the Water Supply Committee, asking the Council if they were willing to take over the Water Supply, and asking an expression of opinion from the Council on the matter.

The Chairman briefly sketched what had been already done with reference to the Water Supply. The Water Committee had come to the conclusion that it would be well to have the Supply vested in the Borough, and it was now forftbe Borough Council to decide if. it would lake over the Supply with its assets and liabilities, which the Committee wished them todo. The County were not agreeable to this arrangement —were, in fact, quite opposed to it. The matter did not require any consideration now. It had been talked over often before. The Supply coufdHbe worked much better by oue body .than by three, as under the present' management no one took any interest in it* >:.; : Cr Merinie thought it would be wel| to have a fuller meeting. . . „.. ..!

Cr McGowan moved -r " That this Council is willing to. take over the assets, liabilities, and full control of the Thames Water Supply, guaranteeing all existing rights and privileges." He said he believed if the Supply were under the control of the Council it could be worked much belter than at' the present, but he would strongly object to giving any premium Tor their share' to the other bodies interested. - • -.

Cr Wilson seconded.' Carried.

A letter on the same subject was read from the Purawai Highway Board. The letter stated that a committee had been appointed, and empowered to dispose of the Board's interest in the Water Supply in such way as not to curtail the privileges now held by Parawai residents.

DOG COLLABS

A memo, was received from Sab* Inspector Kenny, asking for 300 dog collars for the year commencing March Ist, 1879. ' Tenders for the supply of dog collars were received from W. Culpitt, and E. A letter was received from Mr W. Souter on behalf of the Grahams town and Tararu Tramway, asking that the rent of the tramway be remitted, as had been done for the past two or three years, on the grounds that it was barely paying expenses, that the Company had to pay rates, and that, it relieved, roads of an amount of traffic.

Cr Ehrentried thought it might be well for them to take the circumstances men*

tioned into consideration, and remit the rent.

In answer to Cr Ehrenfried, the Town Clerk said tbat £1300 of Borough money had been spent on the tramway. The rent was £20 per annum. Cr Hansen: Suppose the speculation had turned out well. We would have only got £20 per annum all the same. Mr Souter, who was present to support the application, said that the Tramway Company had spent over £10,000 on the tramway.
