THE AFGHAN WAR.
Jellalabad was occupied by troops und^r General Browne on December 23.
General Stewart marched through Candahar on the 11th.
This occupation marks the conclusion of a definite period of the war. All will hare been done that the Quettah column can do before winter.
The troops at Peshawur and the Kuram columns hare settled down in quarters, which, unless unseen events occur, they will occupy for the next two months.
An imposing durbar was held at Jellalabad on the 21st January by General Sir Samuel Brown. Most of the local khans and influential men in the neighborhood attended. A good feeling is manifested. The health of the troops is good. Supplies are plentifully offered by the people. Yacoob Chan had fled from Cabul, and the Afghan army was disorganised.
Major St. John was fired upon in the streets of Candahar by a frantic native, but not wounded. The man was arrested.
A Lieutenant of the Royal Artillery was severely wounded and two soldiers slightly stabbed by a Zealot. '
