CHRISTCHURCH.
This dajr, At the City Council, Councillor Cass drew attention to the performance of the Uncle Tom's Cabin Combination (Com^ pany advertised to take place on Sunday next. He said it would be a disgrace to the Cathedral city if the Sabbath was allowed to be so desecrated. The Mayor said the Council was not the guardian of the public morals, and that the police were the people to stop any performances of any improper character. He referred to the Sunday enter* tainments of certain revivalists and said they had been severely criticised by a section of the Press. Councillor Cass said he took no notice of the Press, as it was known that Press people were sceptics and infidels.
The City Council will meet together dn Thursday for the purpose of presenting the Governor with a farewell address.
