CALEDONIAN.

There is no ga9 in the mine to-day, all the levels down to No. 4 being clear. A small stream of water is kept running down the Tookey shaft to create a draught, and it is expected that except at ce-tain stages of the weather, until the water in the Big Pump shaft rises to the No. 4 level, there will not bo "much trouble with the gas. Some doubt, even under the latter contingency, that operations will be stopped. The anting manager, Mr Corin, commenced driving on the No. 1 lode at No. 2 level this morning. This is the same reef that is being worked by the Old Golden Calf Company. It is a nice looking body of stone, and when worked several years ago under Captain Ttichards' management yielded payable returns. Its present size is about eighteen inches, but it varies considerably. When the Calf winze is through the manager will be able to proceed with more extensive operations on this lode, the air at present being rather light. The

rise on No. 5, near the Cure boundary, is making good headway. The lode is l£ feet thick, but no gold Las yet been seen. This lode is also being worked in the Cure.
