Harbor Board Election.
The meeting of payees of Hftrbor dues, etc., for the purpose of electing three members on the Thames Harbor Board was held at the Borough Council Chambers at two o'clock to-day. There were about 60 persons present.
On the motion of Mr John Leydon, Mr James Kenshaw was voted to the Chair. He said that he wished some one else bad been appointed Chairman as he had not considered the matter and be found it would not be all plain sailing, being somewhat different to the chairmanship of an ordinary meeting. He would, however, endeavor to do his duty without fear or favor. All who paid wharfage dues up to-day of election were entitled to vote. He read the notification of the meeting and then the regulations regarding the election. A number of gentlemen whose names were not on the list, waited in the side room till this stage, and were then admitted one by one and showed their receipts for wharfage, etc., to the Chairman. The following gentlemen were admitted:—Messrs Wick, T. Spencer, Stone, Steedmao, Capt. Steer and Mr J. Smith. • Mr Onyon produced an authority by telegraph to vote for the North Shore Ferry Company, and said his name had been struck off the list at the last moment. He demanded to be allowed to vote as agent for the consignees. The Chairman decided he could only have one vote. Mr Schofield asked to be allowed to vote as collector, but the Chairman declined to admit him. : Mr W. Brown was also refused admission, as he produced no receipt. He asserted that be had paid more than £2 during the year. Mr Gubb's name was not on the list, though he had paid more than £2. He was refused admission, though Mr Leydon and Mr Bead took exception to the Chairman's decision.
This part of the business being disposed of the Chairman read the clauses of the Harbor A-cfc referring to the election.
The following candidates were then nominated:—
William Davies, proposed by Mr Marshall and seconded by Mr Leydon. L. Ehrenfried, proposed by Mr Leydon and seconded by Mr McGowan.
J. B. Steedman, proposed by Mr McGrowan and seconded by Mr Bawden. J. Osborne, proposed by Mr Head and seconded by Mr Marshall. Thos. Veale proposed by Mr Hansen and seconded by Mr McGowan. A. Hogg, proposed by Mr Litchfield and seconded by Mr Bead. Mr Onyon again appealed for three votes—two for proxies, but the Chairman decided to give him only one rote. Messrs Hansen and John Watson were, elected scrutinera.* Mr Onyon got up and said that it was a question between Tararu and Shortland. (Hisses and cries of sit down.) He protested against this election. , The names of the the candidates were then put to the meeting with tho following result: — W. Davies ... 36 ; L. Ehrenfried ... ... 35 J. B. Steedman ... ... 19 J. Osborne ... ... ... 38 Thomas Veale 27 - 4. Hogg ... ... ... 22 The Chairman then declared J. Osborne,' j W. Davies and L. Ehrenfried duly I elected. A vote of thanks to the chair con-, eluded the business.
