CHRISTCHURCH.
Friday.
'Shortly' before 1 o'clock this morning the fire bell gave an alarm for the second time. The brigade were still at work with 'their two steam engines at the river, pumping on the fire at Sargood'i, which had sprung up again very briskly about 10 o'clock. The new fire was found to be in the rear of Twenty man and Cousin's large hardware warehouse, in Cashel street, and in. less than fifteen minutes two streams of water were brought to bear on the flames, which were rapidly subdued, and completely extinguished by half-past 1. It is supposed that the «fire was the work of an incendiary, as a hat and coat were found in a stable at the. rear of the premises.
The insurances at the Christchurch fire were—South British, £3750; New Zealand, £3000; Standard, £2000; National, £2000; Colonial, £1750 ,• London and Lancashire, £1750-; Union, £1500; Liverpool, £1000; Norwich Union, £1000.
