The European newi to-day is of an important character. The difficulties which have for so many months existed between the Marshal President of France and the Legislature, resulting in several changes of the Ministry, have culminated in the resignation by Marshal MacMahon of the office of President of France, and the election of a successor in the person of M. Gre*vy, lately President of the Chamber of Deputies, who again is succeeded by M. Gambetta. Some time ago it would not have been thought possible that such changes could be effected so quietly, and it speaks well for the past working and future success of the Republic that such changes have been so easily brought about; for, so far as we know, the resignations and elections have taken place with as little display or political disturbance as would be the case in Eneland or any country enjoying the highest form of constitutional Government. It is to be hoped that the accession to office of the new men will be characterised by moderation and toleration ; for the friends of the Empire, and the followers of the Legitimists will not be slow to avail themselves of any opening to promote their own views, nor will tftey even be likely to refrain from making common cause against the party in power should they show a disposition to carry matters with too high a hand, or to unnecessarily outrage the feelings and traditions of the anti-republi-cans.
