THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 1879.

The rejection of the proposals made by the United Pumping Association to the local bodies, to enter into a further engagement to keep the Big Pump going for twelve months, will not surprise any one, not even the " disinterested " gentlemen who view with alarm'the "calamity 1' that must overtake the place if the pump is stopped. The shareholders in this association have too often raised the alarm to be heeded now. If the stoppage of the pump is to bring about universal distress, no one will feel it more keenly than the shareholders interested; and if blame should attach to any one or any company the largest share will fall upon those who have let slip so many opportunities of proving the fact whether the ground drained by the Pump is worth the candle; <To propose to drain the shaft from the 400-feet level is a thoroughly selfish suggestion, characteristic of (he body from whom it emanated. If they have nothing more liberal in their programme, we shall, in the interest of the public, call upon the County people to deal with the securities to the utmost limit in their powers, even to selling the property to the highest bidder.
