Sydney, This day. The Assembly yesterday night approved the propriety of introducing a Bill to restrict Chinese immigration.
(Special to Pbess Agency.) Sydney, January 23. A Cook town telegram reports the total failure of the New Guinea expedition which left Melbourne in August in. the schooner Dove. They found no gold, the party are prostrate with fever; four have died, and the remaining party were attacked by natives in canoes but escaped. Shortly after the schooner sprung a leak, and the party were terribly reduced by disease. They were taken to Yokohama by the British ship Launcelot. Melboubne, This day. 1 At the Hongkong fire three hundred and sixty-eight houses were reduced to a mass of ruins. The gaol was only saved by the most strenuous exertions. The British Insurance Companies suffer but little. From the rapid spread of the fire it is believed to be due to incendiarism.
