THE WEEK.
Since last week no fresh phase has occurred iv connection with the Big Pump difficulty. The County Council hare been somewhat vaguely informed that there is a probability of some capitalists purchasing the securities, but nothing definite has, been done in that direction yet. The proffered help of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce has prored to be nothing but a piece of gratuitous advice to the local bodies, which might suit the companies interested very well, but ntot the local bodies who have evidently come to the conclusion that it is perhaps better to let the Pump stop than waste their money in pumping, while the companies show so much apathy. There is an appearance also of both the local bodies playing a kind of waiting game, each of them—as a
member of one of then at a recent meeting expressed it—being afraid to show their hand. With all that, until the County recovers its outlay on the securities, it is without doubt to ita advantage that the Pump should should be kept going, as a stoppage of the Pump might lessen their chance of dispossing of the securities. The effect of the collapse on the Borough is too well known to require comment. This is about the present position of the difficulty out of which we hope the district will find a way ot extricating itself. The Kuranui crushing is showing up so well that considerable attention is being directed to this mine at present. v The Moanatairi shares have had an upward tendency in consequence of the connection; being made between the Point Russell winze and rise, and an improvement in the crushing. .
