THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 1879.

The distress which generally afflicts certain sections of the working classes at home at every return of the winter season is being felt unusually severely just now. Home papers contain details of the widespread misery which prevails. The failures in banking circles, and the consequent collapse of a number of gigantic mercantile firms—added to the prostration of manufactures, caused by war, strikes, and other extraordinary events—have conduced to make the distress more general. In Sheffield it is reported to be greater than has been known for years, for whereas last year the sum of £4000 was subscribed for the alleviation of the distress in the town, it is estimated that this season a sum of from £10,000 to £15,000 will be required to assist the more aggravated cases. A public subscription has been opened, and already between four and five thousand pounds have been received towards this object in Sheffield. It is probable that in other centres of population means will be adopted to ward off the worst features of the blow, and the benevolent will be called upon to assist, although during the past year there have been innumerable calls for different objects, including the various projects for relieving sufferers by the Eusso Turkish war, and the sufferers and survivor* of the numerous marine and mining disasters.
