At the Ashley County Council meeting yesterday, when speaking of the stoppage of railway passes, one of the members said he had refused to give up his, and had travelled on it that very day. The Chairman said it would be better to take the travelling expenses off the special fund of the Council. The matter then dropped.
A man named Christopher Eeynolds died suddenly yesterday. There will be an inquest to-day.
The Bonnie Scotland, a Clydesdale horse purchased for one thousand guineas, the property of Mr James Watt, of Kaiapoi Island, died on the passage on board the Morval. He was brother to the celebrated stallion Pride of Scotland.
It is proposed to found a Churchmen's Club here.
It is stated that the Hoskins Dramatic Company breaks up in about four weeks after the close of the season at Napier. It is also said that Hoskins himself re-opens the Christchurch Theatre on the 23rd March. Friday. It is stated by the Waimate paper that when the Christchurch Volunteers were passing through that place they rushed the refreshment stall kept by an old woman, and did not pay her.
The criminal sessions commence on Monday. There are fourteen cases.
The conduct of the committee in taking action against Francis Valpy, late secretary of the Railway Employees Society, was last night confirmed by a general meeting of the members.
James Follows was admitted into the Hospital suffering from injuries inflicted at the Springfield coal mine through a piece of stone falling on him.
There are now six reaper and binder agents in town.
