HOKITIKA.

Thursday.

Australian news per Claud Hamilton from Melbourne, to the 27th, says :— There has been nothing but amusements and festivities for the last few days, and Melbourne has been crowded with visitors. The Canterbury cricketers were to have been received by a deputation from the East Melbourne Club, but the Arawata stuck on a mud bank, and did not arrive in town till the next morning. Cricket is being played everywhere. The pantomimes this year are not much good. The scenery is pretty fair, but very little in the way of novelty. Other news has been anticipated by the Tararua and cable messages.
