THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 1879.

Mesbhs James Stewart (Resident Engineer, Auckland), and D. M. Beere arrived here by the Rotomahana last ni^ht in connection with the prosecution of works on the Thames Valley line. They were met by the Mayor this morning, who accompanied tuem to the site of the turning of the first sod, and thence along Eyre street to 3hortland and past the Shortland Wharf some distance on the supposed route of the railway line. It is proposed to commence operations at once, as indicated in these columns the other day, and almost immediately there will be an opening for some of,the unemployed on reclamation works. His Worship the Mayor and the Chairman of the Harbor Board have just received telegrams from the Minister for Public Works similar in tenour to that sent to the County Chairman, asking them to cooperate in assisting to procure the necessary land for the railway, which of course they wiil do, and the visit of the Native Minister next week will probably be the means for preparing the way and smoothing the difficulties whicli have to be encountered in land negotiations of this nature with the Natives.
