THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi.` TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1878.
Yestebdat we referred to"'the probability of the Premier and Native" Minister visiting Thames at the beginning of next week. We are also glad to be able to state that a visit may be expected at the end of this week (about Friday) from Messrs James Stewart and D. M. Beere, engineers, to follow up the " turning of the first sod" by other works of^a substantial character. We hear that one of the first pieces of work in connection with the formation of the line will be the reclamation of a portion of (he foreshore, from the site cbosen as the scene of the demonstration on last Saturday week to-; wards Shortland. To do this' it is proposed to lay down a tramway from some of the hills, and let the work to gangs of men on piece—that is, * for excavation, filling trucks, &c. While this is going on, the surveyor will be laying off the line, and small contracts, for making portions of the permanent way can be proceeded with as soon as the work is out of the engineer's hands. By these means facilities will be afforded for employing a considerable amount of labor very shortly, and there is little doubt of any of the vote J of the past session for |bis work remaining unexpended at the close of the financial year. It is, we Believe, intended that as soon as the holidays* are over the programme indicated above shall be* vigorously entered upon and carried out as far as possible, which should inspire people w|th new hope as being calculated to add to the prosperity of the district and people.
