Hospital Annual Demonstration.

The principal feature of yesterday's holiday making was the Hospital Annual Demonstration under the auspices and management of the Friendly (Societies. It took place at Tararu, the pretty gardens at which place were attended by upwards of 2500 people. The various lodges of Odd Fellows, Foresters, and other societies met at their several lodge rooms at half past eight in the morning, and from thence proceeded to the place of rendezvous, Pollen street, at its junction with .Richmond street; The muster of members was not so large as we have seen on some previous years, but considering the season, the fact that many members go to a distance to spend their holiday, and the fact that business exigencies claim the undivided attention of others, the attendance was very creditable, and the display of banners and regalia gave it quite a gay appearance. Three bands responded to the invitation of the committee to assist in the demonstration, namely, the Naval Brass Band, Hibernian Society's Band and the fifes and drums of the Hauraki Engineers, the Thames Scottish being conspicuous by their absence. Aft.r being marshalled by Captain Schofield, the procession marched off in the order decided upon by drawing at a meeting of the committee some time ago, the fine band of the Navals leading. It may alto b« mentioned that Uis Worship the Mayor (W. McCullough, Esq.,) the County Chairman (A. Brodie, Esq.,) and several Borough, and County Councillors, members of the Harbor Board and the Hospital Committee, headed the procession in its march to Tararu, and there was also a large accompaniment of the general public. The Tararu Tramway carriages were put in the line, drawn hy horses, and conveyed hundreds to and from the scene, while: every available cab and 'bus iv the district was called into requisition for the same purpose. The attendance in the gardens may be judged from the fact that a sum of £76 17s' 6d was taken at the gates as entrance money,: and there could not have been less than 1000 persons present (mostly adults) on the flat during the various foot and horse races. We give below the issue of the various events in the order in which' they took place. The weather was fine but hot, a light shower in the after noon just serving to temporarily ' lay the dust. I Although the prizes were not so large as those offered on previous years there were a large number of competitors for | most of the events. Mr John Wilson officiated as judge. \ '. ?- The first event was the— Tug of Was for Volunteers: 20 men aside from each company. Entrance money, one shilling per man. Prize, £10. Three entries or no event. Three companies entered for this event, viz., the Scottish, Navals and Engineers. The two former teams first contested, and and after a sharp, stuggle the Scottish pulled their opponents across the line. The victors then entered the lists with the Engineers whom they also vanquished, thus gaining the prize. The Tog of War I is a diversion which has recently been much in vogue in garrison sports both in England and India, and is very popular. We trust next time one of these events' is placed on a programme of sports' there will be a greater number of compe-, titors. 2. Maiden Back : 120 yards. Ist prize,' £2; 2nd, £1. Entrance, 3s. Torrens, Gould, Manning and Jamieson ' came to the scratch, and after a good race, the result was as follows: Torrens, 1; ; Manning, 2. < 3. Teadesmbn's Hack Race: 1$ miles. Prize, £5. Connon, Eeddy, and Thorburn entered, and after the competitors had performed a number of difficult feats, Eeddy was declared the winner, with Connon second. Jamieson, 5 yards... ... 2 Charles McLiver, 8 yards .... 0 Thomas Nelson, 3 yards 0 George Moorcraft, 8 yards ... 0 McManus was entered for this race but did not come to the post. This was a pretty race, though from the commence* ment it was seen it belonged to Phillips, the Auckland runner, who came in winner several yards ahead of Jamieson. Boys' Race, 150 yards, under 15 years . (Handicap): Post entry, Is; Ist prize, £1; 2nd, 10s ; 3rd, special. This event drew forth 20 entries. The result was—Barnett 1, F. Brown 2. Fisher, 25 yards 0 This was a grand race, and excited great interest. Hope and Daykin—the latter a lad. of 17— were favorites. It ended in a victory for Hope over Daykin of about a yard, the ruck being hopelessly in the rear.. Daykin ran splendidly, and it was the opinion of not a few that were the race run over again he would be the winner. Maobi ,House Back; 2 miles: post entries, 10s; prize, £5. Takerei Te Poto's No Name ... ,1 . Haora's Quarry Q Tunia's Puppy.. ... "" ... 0 No Name won by about a dozen lengths. Bandsmen's Back (Handicap); 100 yards; post entries, 2s; Ist prize, £2; 2nd, £1.
