A piece of land on the Thorndon Reclamation, thirty feet frontage/ has been leased for 99 years at an annual rental of five hundred pounds, the lessees to have the power of purchasing for nine thousand pounds at any time within fifteen years. The Committee of the New Zealand Rifle Association will in a few days meet to draw up the programme for the meeting at Nelson. The schooner Torea has' been launched, and taken on to Picton for repairs. . The Church of England body is about to organise' a general church fund for the diocese of Wellington, to provide ade-
quate stipends for such a, bedy of clergy as may be required; to build churches, parsonages and schools; and train young men for the work of the Ministry. It is proposed to raise the fund by certain graduated weekly subscriptions.
A very satisfactory trial of a fire escape sheet belonging to the Wanganui Fire Brigade was made here at the Occidental Hotel. The 'Wellington Brigade intend to order one also.
Mr Sheehan has obtained from the Natives all land necessary for the HuttWaikanae railway, the construction of which :is to be commenced as soon
possible.
