WELLINGTON.

This day.

The New Zealander, referring to the statement that the Speakerghip of the Upper House would be offered to Sir Wm. Fitzherbert, says its statements should not be assumed to be authoritative, and that in this particular matter its conjecture was premature, and that not only has no such offer been made but that it has not yet been in contemplation, the Government not having yet considered the most fitting successor to the Speaker.

It is understood that Mr Sheehan will only stay an hoar or two in Wellington after arriving from the West Coast, but will proceed to Auckland with the utmost despatch to confer with the Premier.
