August Morgan, Hot Springs Hotel, Te Aroha. .■''■.. Mr Miller said he had received a telegram from Mr Campbell to oppose. The Chairman said the reason the telegram was sent was that Campbell was laying out- a township; and wished to erect a house there himself. He conBidwred the house necessary in the interests of morality and decency. Once he was up there, and there were four grog shanties and hone of them licensed. Mr Miller said the Waitoa settlers wished to object, and he thought they should have a chance to oppose. The Chairman said he was perfectly convinced of the necessity ot the house, and the Bench would grant the license, recommending that the fee be £20 per annum.

Mr Brassey 1 appeared for applicant, and said that the pr< sent applicant had disposed of the house to Mr Munro, and if the renewal was granted the license would be transferred. ; , Mr Miller said he had been instructed to oppose, and held in his hand a petition sighed by nearly all the residents for 10 miles around against the granting of the license. ; ' • . The police report gave a very bad account of the manner the house was conducted by Drummovitcli. ; Messrs McLaren, Woodward and others stated that they had recently been over at Tairua, and had difficulty in finding accommodation. They considered a public house necessaryy Mr Brassey said that the Union Sash and Door Qompany evidently wanted to ■tarve out this house, as on travellers . arriving at the mill they could not even get information as to the whereabouts of the house, as it : was as much as their places were worth to tell. Mr Monk, general manager to the company, spoke strongly against the existence of a hotel in proximity to the mill His Worship refused the application, and said he would visit Tairua himself, and if he considered a hotel necessary, he would grant a license for one. J. Wilson, Grand Junction Hotel, Tararu. No objection. Granted. Court adjourned.
