RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT

John Paul, on remand, was charged with unlawfully deserting his wife and two children.
Defendant said he had gone away to look for work, and had come back when he found it. He admitted he had gone away in a passion. Order made that the defendant pay 12s 6d per week, commencing on the 16th inst.,and also refund the Borough Council
£3 15s 6d given in rations to his wife, and to pay the costs.
ASSAULT.
Maria Donovan was charged with assaulting one Jane French. . [This case had been adjourned last Friday to enable the plaintiff to procure farther evidence.] Adam Thompson, sworn, -.deposed—l was in I'ollen street op the sth instant at about 12 o'cloi k noon, I saw Mrs French with her lund i*p to her head, which was bleeding, and heard he? say that Mrs Donovpa had struck her with-*-s! one. I saw Mrs Donovrn goic£ imo her house. Lizzie Eic'iprds, swoin, deposed—l recognise the plpint'ff and defendant. I saw t'leoi on the sth in3t., and Mrs Fiencli otime ofer to me and asked me if I had s^ea Mis Dr lovan strike ha? with a store. I said I had not. Her face was bleeding. Fined 20s and cos Is, or 7 days' imprisonment.- . ■
