THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O' CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6,1878.

We have no deaire to harshly criticise the " last words " of the retiring Mayor, but we cannot allow the statement that the Mayor elect was the nominee of the County to go forth uncontradicted. It ia an unfounded assertion, for the County hud no more to do with bringing out the Mayor elect than the party who now take their defeat at the late contest so much to heart. It is a statement made to divert people's minds from the real causes which contributed to the rejection of the present occupant of the Mayoral chair, and the election of his opponent; causes which we have no wish particularly to refer to here, but which are very well known to have mainly decided the contest. The statement that the dignity and prestige of the office of Mayor will be decreased is mere bunkum, and the references generally to the election are gratuitous reflections upon the principal local body with whom the speaker professed to have worked so harmoniously, and an insult to the intelligence of the 381 voters who rejected his candidature and put in his opponent. We are sorry ! the retiring Mayor said anything to nec essitate writing this much ou his " last ; words."
