The deputation to Mr Oliver Wakefield to-day, on the matter of obtaining a portion of the £5000 grant for prospecting, to resume operations in the south drive at the 640 feet level of the U.P.A. shaft, did not receive much encouragement. One thing, Mr Wakefield—however much disposed to fall in with the representations of a' deputation—has to keep in mind that he is not a Minister of the Crown, and therefore wisely refrains from making promises or holding out inducements that all which may be asked of him will be granted. Mr Wakefield has seen what has been done in the low levels , of the Big Pump shaft, and there is no doubt that on Thames matters he will be largely consulted in the futureAny further representations on this matter of a subsidy for pushing on the South Drive should be made to Ministers, and we would' advise that no time be lost in doing this. We must not let the grass grow under our feet if we are to get anything done for the district, and this South Drive, if carried out, would be of incalculable benefit.
