RATIONS FOR SICK AND DESTITUTE, AND ALLEGED DEFAULT OF CONTRACTORS.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sib, —In reference to the defalcations practised by Hewin Bros., I see. by yonr Star of the 19th inst. that Che Colonial Secretary has approved of the action of the Believing Officer in withdrawing the contract from them for supplying the sick and destitute with rations. Now,' sir, as a considerable portion of what others and myself were entitled to has been kept from us for many months, may I ask you need we reasonably expect that the defaulting firm be compelled to make Rood the deficiency P I have always looked on your paper as a friend to the poor, and if we could receive any information from you on the subject, it would be a great boon to. several widows and their children and other desitute people on the Thames, who from sheer necessity were compelled to have their names inserted on the ration listfor relief. I will thank you inserting this letter, and I enclose my name and address, but as I do not want my poverty paraded before the public any mote than I cjan avoid, you will therefore excise ma. for signing myself

A Widow. ' Thames, November 22; 1878.

[The question, we presume, is under consideration. The Government will pro* bably be guided by the report of the Commission. If the defalcations were proved, restitution should be insisted upon.—Ed.]
