THE WEEK.
;;-Inrordinarjr mining m^^ I^^ ii Very little stir, but two or three thing! seem to point to the probability of a par* tial revival shortly.,/ >First may dbe men«^> tioned the;, steps taken by the cCountr Council in regard to the securities heldL over the Uhited Pumping Association ' property. The action of the Council mast necessarily bring the companies tni<tapt§d to their bearings. Apparently, the directors of; these somnolent associations hare been under the impression that they could " work" the Council as they, willed; that such a thing as realising upon the securities .in =the best market if as an-impos-sibility, or, at least,.' an improbability. Now , they must see that they hare been reposing in a fool's, paradise/ wjjl if they have the remotest idea of redeeming 1 their properties i-they' molt bfl prepared with something more tangible than an offer to pay off -the. amount actnaljy spent by' the Council in prospecting' the deep levels for them. A great; deal too much consideration has been shown, to these companies. The Government' subsidy seems to hare been a mistskei for having once tasted the sweets'qfj tubaidies~having work done for nothing—the associated , companies seem indisposed, to. do anything for themselves. The proposal to sell the securities in the best market ' may bring themi to their senses; and,, sooner than see the properties sold to outsiders, surely some ofrtheo Auckland people will come to the rqseuetonlf-they do we see a way to their giving new . life .to the district, by relieving the County and Borough' of * great drain upon their resources, and taking upon themselves a legitimate charge; by re* deeming the £50,000 securities -and once more setting to work in' a systematic manner. Another, proposal which should help to initiate a new order of things is the Karaka and Tararu Tunnelioheme. This has, been so prominently before the public for the last week or two that particular reference, need not be made here* further than to say that if it should be successfully launched-r-of which there should be no doubt —there would be very great inducement for similar works (btiing started. Oa a slightly smaller scale that idea of pegging out a claim on the Una of. the Water Race extension tunnel is. a good one, and the inception deserve!* a substantial'reward. These several things may singly or collectively exercises great influence on the progress of the district during the next few'months, and the improvement of the Queen of Beauty pros-'peets.-at low level is decidedly^encouraging. The Thames is' now npVfdr a revival. It has been at low water before, and something has turned up.' While encouraging hopefulness, it is prudent to advise perseverance in every legitimate enterprise, and that being done, the' results may be as good as they have been
