The ways of the Railway Department are, says tbe Morning Herald,past finding ' out. Here ia an instance: 11 cases, mensuring 4 tons,, were recently sent from Dunedin to Christchurch. The carriage demanded was 235. We confess this to be a/very moderate charge, and we do not think'exception can be taken to'it. But the^ strange part of the matter is that a similar number of cases were previously \ forwarded by steamer to Lyttelton, and from Lyttelton to Christchurch by rail, when the railway authorities charged 35s . for,carrying the cases the six miles or so that diride Lyttelton from Christchurch.
