Tuesday. The question of the desirability of making provision for the religious instruction of the young in the public schools has been discussed by the Synod, but nothing definite was resolved upon. The Gaversham Borough Council has agreed to Mr Proudfoot's tramway proposals', but his' concessions are to terminate the same time as those, for the city. The Board of Governors of the Highschool have resolved, in conjunction with the Otago University, to obtain from Europe a teacher of the .French language. . , . The Committee of the Otago Cricket Association to-day wrote to the City Council complaining of the inadequate provision which exists in Dunedin for cricket. They suggested that an additional area of the Southern Kecreation Ground should be reclaimed. ' . . G. S. Cooper, on behalf of the Government, has written an explanatory letter-to the Dnnb^ck Eoad Board in regard to the prosecution of ii-i Chairman for making false returns. The Board has resolved to apply to Government to pay the costs of the defence.
