Christmas Sports.
A meeting of gentlemen * interested in getting up the Thames annual sports at Christmas was, hel£ at the Governor Bovren Hotel last evening. .Amongst those present we noticed Messrs' S. Stephenson (convener of the meeting), T. Spencer, J. Phillips, Cook, G. T. Wilkinson, Casey, H. Mcllhone, Hogg, Johns, Butler, Vaughan, McDowell, O. D. Grant,, Dufty, Wells, Williams, Bennett, Clementson, W. Browne, J. Connell, Me Caul, W. Brown, Flett, and others.
Mr Stephenson was voted to the chaic. He said he thought it advisable to keep the people on the Thames during the holidays if possible, and it was for them to decide how it, was done. •
Mr' Brown proposed, and Mr, Hogg' j seconded, that Mr Harcourt be appointed j secretary. After some persuasion Mr Harcourt accepted the duties. ' j Some discussion As to where the sports be held ensued, and Mr Butler proposed' that .all subscribers of one guinea each decide where the sports be held.
Mr Wells seconded
Mr Williams, proposed, as an amendment, that every subscriber of 5s have a vote where the sports be held, 10s two votes, and so- on., .
Mr Godkin seconded. ,*■ Mr Wells suggested that the system followed last year be followed this year. On the motion and amendment being •put to the meeting the former was carried. " . i The following gentlemen' then put their i names down for one guinea each:— Messrs T. Spencer, J. C. Williams, A. Butler, M. Casey, T. Godkra, F. Wells, £. Johns, W. Fergusson, J. Phillips, G. T. Wilkinson, Bennett, junr., A. jHogg, W. Brown, Barker, S. Stephenson, F. Bennett, senr., G. McCaul, JR. Graham, W. Bennett, M. Vaughan, W. McDowell, J. Connell. T. Dufty, J. Wilson, G. Symington, Quint, (J. Short, and Neial. It was then resolved' that the sports be held the day or days after the Hospital Demonstration provided that comes off on Boxing day. The lessees of the Parawai and Tararu Gardens then, at the request of the subscriber, put in tenders for the sum for which they would dispose of the Gardens for the day. Mr Spencer's offer was to give the Gardens for two days for £20, reserving the right to sell strawberries, or to give £45 to the race fund and retain the gates. Mr Bennett to give the gates for £10, or gates and booths for £30. ' Some discussion ensued, after which the majority decided to accept Mr Bennett's offer. None of the Parawai people voted, and one gentleman was rather* forcible in his denunciation of the decision of the subscribers.
Messrs A. Butler, S. Stepbenaon, Wells, Williams, Hogg, Wilson, Casey, R. Graham (junr.), and G. T. Wilkinson, were appointed stewards, and the meeting adjourned.
