HIGH-CLASS TRAGEDY.
B>t many years ago a well known but X obscure comedian, while under an Bgement at a theatre in New York, k a fancy to a young fellow who played minor parts in the dramas then repre* feed. One day after rehearsal, he inpd him to dinner at a Broadway restau[t. After a good .dinner the actor called the bill, and, to his dismay, discovered the had no money. In changing his thing in the morning; he neglected to :e the money from his discarded pantans. H© told the young fellow of the x " he was in, and asked him for a loan. >rtified and chagrined, he answered Lt all he had was just sufficient to pay b fare home. Then the actor called the Kaurant-beeper and told him the truth Out the money. The quickly-excited n raved and stormed at the comedian, ping, that he had resolved not to be indled by any one, and that he should id for the police.. At this time a short, >ut old gentleman stepped up to the >prietor and said firmly, "How dare n speak to a gentleman in the way you ye done ? His^ mistake is a perfectly tural one, and such as might occur to y man. "I*am ashamed of you! I'll no no more in. your house, nor permit rjfriends to do so in' future. Here, take f!" and the old gentleman took a fifty liar note from a fat wallet and handed to the discomfited landlord, saying, )educt the amount of the young man's I, and return me the change." The bprietor's apologies were unheeded. He raded the old gentleman his change, and am essayed apologies. When in the feet, the comedian handed his benefactor
card and' address, adding that he uld certainly reimburse him. The old tleman's indignation quickly passed y, and, beginning to smile, he added, lat's all right, young: man ; I've been lg to pass that* counterfeit bank note ay."
