Alexander Brodie ... ,i, 133 James Coutts ... ... ... ■ log Andrew Hart ... ...* ... 20 Richardßoss ... ... ... 41 . On the numbers becoming known in Waiotahi, Mr Brodie and Mr Coutts were seized by some of their most enthusiastic and "powerful" supporters and carried to a distance, where they were hoisted on to a table amid repeated cheers from the assembled crowd, which at this hour (half past six o'clock) was greater than at any time during the day. When quiet had been restored,
Mr Brodie said that although no official declaration of the state of the poll had been made, he gathered from the statements of friends around him, srnd from their enthusiastic manner, that he and his colleague had been re-elected (cheers). That was not altogether unexpected, as they had done their duty to the constituency in the past, and the many assurances of support they had received during the short time preceding the election not only proved that he and his colleague had secured their approbation, but had also led . them to expect the result which had now come about (cheer). He could say that the election had been fairly conducted on all sides, and their opponents, though beaten now, could hope for a better result when they were better known and more experienced in public affairs. Before concluding he would call upon them to give three cheers for Colonel Eraser, Beturning Officer, for his impartial conduct of the election. The cheers were given most heartily, and cheers were also given for Messrs Brodie and Coutts.
. Mr Coutfcs, in returning thanks, i,aid he was proud of the position to which he had been reelected, and could assume the electors that nothing should be wanting on his part to deserve their confidence in the future.
More cheering took place, and the assemblage dispersed.
