It ds understood that the increase to be made to the pay of the police by Government will be one shilling per day for sergeant-majori, and sixpence per day for all other grades downwards, including armed constabulary.
The opera of II Trovatore was produced in Italian in the Queen's Theatre last night by amateurs under the direction of Signor Morley. It was a great success.
At a meeting of the Harbor Board Mr Ramsay complained of the damage done to the port of Dunedin through delays in discharging cargo. In Lyttelton he said vessels were discharged in half the time taken in Dunedin.

Considerable anxiety is felt here regarding the Government steamer Stella, which left Westport on Sunday last for Wellington, via the Farewell Spit. Immediately upon the arrival of the s.s. Hinomoa from the South to-day she was sent in search of the missing boat. Later.
Thia day. Tbe Stella arrived here last night. She had been detained some days at Totaranui Bay through bad weather, owing to her being unable to land stores at Cape Farewell.
