Presbyterian Anniversary Soiree.

The anniversary soiree in connection •with the St. James' Presbyterian Church eventuated last evening, and was a marked success. The Academy of Music was crowded, and _the viands provided gave the greatest satisfaction. The tables were presided over by the young ladies of the congregation. After tbe tables had been cleared away the Eev. S. J. Neill, pastor of the congregation, took the chair and delivered a short opening address. He apologised for the absence of the Eevs. J. Nixon and E. S. Bunn.

The Rev. J. T. Hinton delivered a short address, after which the choir, presided over by Mr Grigg, efficiently sang the anthem, " Hallelujah, praise the Lord."

The Rev. Mr Carrick, of St. Andrew's, Auckland, delivered an excellent address, and expressed the pleasure he felt at being present* He was followed by the Rev. R. Laiihley, who spoke strongly

on the great moral depravity existing on the Thames. He called on them oue and all to assist in wiping out the sad stain that had come over them.

The choir having sung an anthem, after an interval of five minutes the concept took place.

Misses Fergusoa and Clark played a pianoforte duet, exhibiting considerable proficiency, after which the choir rendered a part song, " By the Moonlight." Mr Peter Ferguson gained considerable applause by his rendition of " The Rose of Allandale," and this was followed by another part song by the choir. Miss Clark sang " Killarney" very sweetly, and Miss Ferguson was deservedly encored for her singing of " Janet's Choice." She responded by singing " Meet Me by Moonlight alone." After another part song by the choir, Mr Farren satfg " Nil Desperandum " in good style, which concluded the muiical portion of the evening's entertainment.

Several votes of thanks were then carried, and the entertainment terminated with the singing of " God Save the Queen."
