The weather for the races is everything that could be desired. Large numbers of strangers gjre in town, and there is every chance of a large gathering on the course.

The following are the acceptances for Christchurch Jockey Club Handicap .:— Fishhook, King Quail, Rama, Chancellor, Templeton, Mufti, Luna, Longlands, Bribery, Maritana, Foam, Laertes. Jfree Handicap : — Foul Play, Lady of the Lake, Kalulu, Camballo, Danebury, Sink* ing Fund, and Lara. . Natator was Bold yesterday to Mr W. F. Neilson.

Ten scholarships have been received here for the girls' scholarships at the High School.

At a meeting of the Charitable Aid and Hospital Board this afternoon, Dr Ghiltfern, who arrived in Wellington a few weeks ago in charge of an immigrant ship, was appointed house surgeon at a salary of £250. . .'
