In Mr T. Lawless' window is exhibited a fine oleograph picture in maisive gilt frame, which has been presented for competition at the rifle range by the Thames Naval Brigade. The picture is called "Does he lore me?" and the subject is a beautiful girl engaged in pulling a flower to pieces, one of those innocent superstitions believed in by lovelorn damsels who wish to discover if they are loved. The picture is so realistic that with the falling petals one can readily imagine the alternate " He does," "He doesn't," and the increasing excitement as the end of the trial. approaches. The framing was dene by Mr F. Dann, and is a credit to his establishment.
A meeting of Mr Greenville's committee will be held in Bateß's store, Rolleston street, to-morrow evening, at seven o'clock. From the way Mr Greenville V supporters are working up his candidature, and his own popularity, his chances of election to the County Council are looked upon as very good.
Tomorkow, Tuesday, Nov. sth, will be Gunpowder Plot day —a commemoration that possesses a lingering but feeble interest amongst the youngsters in most Colonial towns. But the day has a far greater interest throughout Australasia and New Zealand, as being " Cup" day—the day for deciding the Colonial Blue Ribbon of the turf, the Melbourne Cup. To-morrow night some will be rejoicing over the sudden acquisition of comparative wealth, while others will be deploring their bad luck.
The boards of the Theatre Royal were occupied on Saturday evening by the Elder troupe, a very clever variety company, and one of the best for its numbers we have had here for some time. There was a pretty fair audience. The chief attraction of the performance was the singing and dancing of the Infant Wonder, a child about six years old, and apart from the merit of his performance, the amount of "side" the little fellow put on was truly novel am amusing. Master James Elder, a boy about 12 years old, danced and performed several acrobatic feats very neatly, and Mr S. Elder (the one-legged gymnast) surprised the audience with his difficult feats on the horizontal bar and Roman rings, while the Man Serpent with his wonderful feats of contortion came in for a fair share of applause. A good evening's amusement concluded with the perfor* mance of a laughable farce in which the Infant Wonder greatly distinguished himself.
Some talk on 'change was indulged in yesterday (says the Herald), with respect to a rather smart transaction in respect to a little discounting. It appears that A wanted a 14 days' post dated cheque for £14 discounted, and abplied to B, who, knowing his mark, told him it could be done, and asked him to call again in a few minutes. Aon returning was offered £7, and, under the pressing circumstances, was obliged to take it. Thirteen days elapsed, and A was met in the street by a retired tradesman, who said, " I shall present the cheque to-morrow which I discounted for you. I suppose it is all right ? " A replied in the affirmative, but added, "Don't you think you dealt unfairly with me in charging so much?" To this the tradesman replied, " I don't think 10s is too much, but if you think so, I will retorn 2s 6d." A was astounded, and related the whole affair, and the two went to B, who had acted as agent, and, after some strong expressions between the principal and agent, the former threatening to expose, the whole transaction, at last B disgorged £6 10s, to the delight of A. m
Editor Labourchere of the London journal, Truth, should be a happy man. He is defendant in five libel suits —one brought by a man whom he called a swindler and a card-sharper; one by Manager Robertson of the Royal Aquarium, whom he called a thief, liar and defrauder of the Aquarium Company; another by a director of that company, whom he accused of abetting Robertson's frauds; still another by Miss Lytton, alleged wife of Robertson, who he asserts is no actress; aid the fifth by an Oriental correspondent of the Telegraph, whom he attacks as a rascal. To one and all he opposes the defence that he tells the "truth."
