Friday. In the Legislative Council to-dayy after the transaction of some formal business, the Hon. Colonel Whitmore said, speaking of the pioneer railway system, that the system had, after enquiry, been found unsuitable to the colony. It was agreed to sit to-morrow (Saturday) on the question. Got. Whitmore said, judging from, the obstructive nature of the debates in another place, it was possible Parliament might sit till Christmas., : In answer to the Hon. J. Hall, Col. Whitmore gave the number of immigrants for Canterbury for current year it-r-Por Canterbury, 1600; Timaru direct, 300; also 400, chiefly for Canterbury. Several bills having, been' brought up from the other Chamber and read a first time, the, following: bills were read a third time and passed :—Milford Harbour Board, Wellington City Boundaries, Thames Harbour Act, Hokitika Harbour Board andl New, River Harbour' EiicM*r ment, the District Law Societies andthe Xyttleton Waterworks Transfer Bills, were read a second time, and the Council went into committee.

The District Law Societies, Lyttleton Waterworks Transfer, and Wairoa Harbour Board Bills passed through. The two first were not amended, and were read a third time and passed. The/tlast was reported with amendments. The Council adjourned shortly ■ after 4 o'clock till next day (Saturday). ■-,■' i
