THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1878.
On the principle that " the King can do no wrong," it may be assumed that Ministers of the Crown are equally infallible. It is only on such an assumption that people lee no harm in the attempt of the Premier to give to three newspapers a monopoly of a special telegraph wire from Auckland to the Bluff for a sum per annum equal to one half the cost to the country. Ardent ministerial supporters and admirers Bee nothing unft.ir in this arrengement; while the proprietors of the favored ; newspapers chuckle in their sleeves at the success of their negotiations, and the power which this nice little agreement with a complalsLnt Premier places in their hands lo embarrass rival journals. The defence'of this arrangement, by Sir George Grey is about the lamest we have ever read coming from him, and the admission »thathe had en--1 tered into the agreement against the wishes of his colleague at the head of the Telegraph Department and the General Manager of the same ia suggestive of an interference in departmental affairs which, we should have thought, would have earned the Commissioner of Telegraphs to resign.
