Karaka and Tararu Tunnel.
The following letter was received yes* terday, from which it will be seen that the scheme is not likely to be abandoned for lack of assistance at the hands of the Government :—
Secretary for Gtoldfields Office, Wellington, 18th October, 1878. Gentlemen, —I have the honor, by the direction of the Honorable the Minister of Lands/ft inform you that your memorial to the Hoaorable tbi Premier of the 24th of May lj>3t in reference to the formation of a Company fo ■ the construction of a tunnel from Karaki to Tararu Creek, Thames Ctoldfield, hae been under the consideration of the Government and of the G-oldfields Committee of the House of Bepresentativea, and that the following decision has been come to in the matter:—The Government will take steps to put the Company in possession of the land applied for as a special claim, upon the conditions—
1. That the capital be not less than £43,033, wlreh shall be subscribed and the preliminary arrangements made for working the scheme within six months from the Ist November proximo. 2. That the Company be duly incorporated and registered according to law. 3. That the tunnel bo commenced simultaneously at both ends, the dimensions to be not less than (7) seven feet by seven (7) feet, and <i be draiud and securely timbered according to specifications appoved by (Jovernment.
4. That the construction of. the tunnel shall proceed continuously night and day, Sundays and holidays excepted. 5., That any auriferous ground discovered shall be worked either by the Company or by tribufors.
6. That ilohf. of entry to the tunnel by the Government shall at all times be allowed, and that on payment of a reasonable charge, right shall be given to use the tunnel as an approach to ground outside that'held by the Company. 7. That the construction of the tunnel and subsequent working of the ground shall proceed under Government inspection, and according to regulations. .
8. That the Government reserves the right of withdrawing or cancelling the Company's title to the land if the Campany should fail in fulfilling the conditions. .
Upon your forwarding satisfactory proof that the first two of these conditions have been complied with, the Government will make the necessary arrangements for giving the Company a legal holding over .the land. I have the honor ts be, Gentlemen,
