The Government have appointed Mr John Ollivier, District Auditor, to hold an enquiry into the claims for compensation for land taken for road diversion purposes by the Provincial Government in Akaroa and other districts.

Monday. At a meeting of directors of the Temperanre Hotel to-day, it was stated 2,500 shares had been taken up. In consequence of the strong opinion expressed by the Good Templars, it was resolved that no intoxicating drinks should be supplied on the premises.

The amount of Customs duties collected here on Saturday was £750.

The Marionettes finished a very successful season on Saturday.

A case against Thomas Poole, for adulterating bread with alum, was heard at the Police Court to-day. The defendant was fined £4 and costs. A similar case against Stephen Simpson was dismissed, the evidence not being conclusive. Another baker, for having no scales, on his premises to weigh bread, was fined 10s. Eichard Walker, for fishing in the river Avon, was mulcted in the costs of the case, and strongly cautioned not to repeat the offence.

It is now said there will be no contest for the mayoralty.
