WELLINGTON.
This day.
A smart shock of earthquake occurred here last night a few minutes before eleven o'clock. No damage of any kind reported.
A paper laid on the table by the Telegraph Commissioner shows that the Government have leased a special wire to Reid of the Dunedin Times, Beeves of the Lyttelton Times, and Horton of the Auckland Herald, for two years at two thousand annually; the wire to be available from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. during the recess, and till 3 a.m. during the session. Messrs Holt and McCarthy petition the Parliament against it to-day.
