It is understood that Ministers hare agreed to raise the pay of the police from the Ist of January next, but it is not yet ♦known to wb.at extent, , !
It is currently rumored here that the Government has made a concession by which certain parties are to have the exclusive right to a special wire for press telegrams from Auckland to Invercargill for a period of two years at a fixed annual payment in lieu of the present press; rates, the special wire to be at the service of the lessees from 8 jp.m., to 3 a.m. Ministers decline to give any definite' information, but promise to lay the papers before the House. • .

The Telegraph Department received the following report this evening:—• " The Port Darwin and Java cable has been interrupted since last night by the repairing vessel having cut the. cable to take out the last fault!
