THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1878.
As nothing had been heard from the seat of Government for some time as.to what was being done in the matter of the application of the promoters of the Earcka Tunnel schems, and the promoters were desirous that the business should not be shelved, the authorities* were communicated with yesterday with a view to information. A reply has been received which is so far catisfactory. It is in effect that the application was referred to the Goldfields Committee, who have not yet reported on it to the House, so that no further s'eps can be taken until the Committee report:. "With the probable prorogation of the House next week, the Goldfields Committee will shortly, no doubt, bring their committee labors to a close, and the Government may then act upon the report if it be favorable to the scheme, and we have no reason to fear it will be otherwise. The present would be a very opportune time for starting such^ a work as the Karaka Tunnel, when mining generally is dull. As a cooperative concern it will enlist the support of all classes—bring together capital and labor, and perhaps result in discoveries of the greatest importance. Should the anticipations of the promoters be realised, there will be inducements for the formation of several companies on a similar basis, the labors of which could be directed to a thorough* examination of the auriferous hills of this district from a number of levels in situations as may be decided upon by the companies. A few days should see the authority for making a beginning in the Earaka scheme.
