OTAKI.
Monday
The Felix Stowe, 500 tons, coal laden, went ashore at .4 o'clock yesterday morning half a mile north of Otaki. The sailors say it was blowing too hard to shorten sail. A boat was lowered soon after the vessel struck, but she broke away and came ashore, and was found and manned by Maoris and half-castes, who safely landed the captain's wife and three seamen. ,A second boat) with the captain and the rest of the crew, capsized. The captain, mate, an apprentice and one seaman were drowned. The remainder were saved, after many narrow escapes, by the Maoris and half-castes, who behaved splendidly. The first boat brought a line ashore, which was useful in saving the rest. A terrific sea was breaking When the vessel went ashore, but she does not appear to be much injured. Pugsley, the coach-driver, and other Europeans, deserve great credit for their exertions in saving.Jife. The barque is breaking up. Her back is broken, and all hands have left her. -
