! Evebybodt will b« delighted to see, from recent reports of proceedings of the two:principal lbcar governing bodies, that the friendly relations ( we have so often" endeavored to promote hare at last been established. At the last meeting of the County Council, the members, desirous of expressing their sense of the Chair* man's indefatigable labors in Wellington, proposed to record a vote of thanks*, but the Chairman, with becoming modesty, seemed inclined to underrate his own merits, and almost insisted, ' in., coupling the Mayor.; name, in the jote, of thanks, so councillor! acceded to the suggestion. At last, meeting ofi the Borough Counoil, this County compliment to the Mayor was brought up, and Be -©ugh Councillors were,..very nearly passing a vote of thanks to the County' Chairman for assisting the Mayor in a mission which he undertook against the unanimous wish of the Council.. 6ne councillor, • however, who does not generally lose his.head, not even when it is possible to be generous at a trifling cost, objected to such a vote being snatched from t~e Council, and ultimately a vote of thanks was passed to the County Chairman for his advocacy of Borough interests ; the Councils; thus presenting a happy illustration of that old. saw, "Claw me , and I'll * claw thee," and, we presume, laying the foundation of a happy Understanding that shall "be enduring and mutually advantageous to Borough and County, and enable them to live happily together ever after.'
We publish to-day a letter from "A Scot" in correction of an erroneous statement we made yesterday, that the failure of the Western Bank closely followed the collapse of the Eoyal Bank of Scotland. The bank which collapsed at that time.(lßs7)—-not before, but almost simultaneously with the Western Bank, was the Edinburgh and Glasgow, which had to wind up its affairs with the entire Joss of its capital. The error occurred through writing hurriedly from recollection of events happening over 20 years ago. We sincerely trust that as we promptly make the amende for our mistake, the directors of the Eoyal Bank of Scotland will not. make examples of us by prosecuting us/, for reckless writing, and injuring their credit. Our correspondent, we may remark, is not strictly accurate in his facts. A good authority states the Eoyal Bank of Scotland was started in 1727, while "A Scot" puts'the date as 1705. A more important inaccuracy it the statement he hazards that the effect of the Glasgow Bank's failure will be Only, local, while yesterday's calograms recorded-the collapse of three-powerful firms with three millions of liabilities, all owing to >the Glasgow; Bank's closing. To-day the news informs us that there is a panic in bank shares, and more failures are apprehended. ■ ■'...'
