THE O'CONNELL SUBSCRIPTION.

• (To the Editor of the Evening Star.) , Sib,—ln reply to your morning con* temporary re the subscription lists for Mrs O'Connell, I would wish to state that,. I also havelbeen somewhat une.sy regardihg the above,,and as a collector, and for my own credit's sake, I will ipforni him as far as I know. Soon after J,he sad accb gent a list was banded to me by Mr' Mcllhone, which then had already nearly £40 collected, and while in my possession' £8 5s Was added. .I. then handed the list and the £8 5s to Mr Mcllhone, for which he gave me a receipt. Since this I have beeu stopped in the street two or three times by. persons enquiring •i'What became of the money col-, lectedfor MrsO'ConnellP" Thia being repeated; I went to Mrs O'Connell and asked her what she had, received from the moneys collected for her P She replied that she had received £15 only, and (his was not later than last Saturday, the sthinst.. ;I expressed my surprise, ;and immediately made inquiries of Mr Mcllbone, to whom I had paid in my collection. He asked Mr Souter, who replied :' Ob, Mrs O'Connell s knows all about that," but he did not*show her ack.now-. lodgement. Since this I again visited /VTrs O'Connell, and she again told me she had not received any more, but was* going, up to Auckland w'.th Capt. Souter, and then, perhaps, Bhe would get someinore. She has gone to Auckland, and I know no more. In justice to myself I trust you will insert, the above. I may mention that on another occasion, 'another ■ collector, who had, forwarded £15 to the fund, and myself called on Mr Mcllhone to'inspect the old list and those handed in by ourselves, when we were told that. Captain Souter was asked'for the lists, but he did not give them*over. During my stay on the Thames I have cl'ccl-d over £40 for such cases; aqd have, always seen it duly acknowledged. As three months have now elapsed, I should feel obliged, and can only refer enquirers to Captain Spater, and on behalf of the collectors and, their credit, we trust that he will forward a full explanation.—l am, &c, ' • . . bis . ! • William X Lodeb. . *. ..mark.
