HOST WILLIAMS AND THE POLICE.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sib,—On Thursday last, 3rd instant, you gave us a long account of the Police Court case against Host Williams of the Provincial Hotel for assaulting £)>o police in the discharge of their duty. It appears to have been regarded as $ very serious affair, for a. £10 penalty was inflicted and paid. But I was surprised to observe that no notice was taken, either by the Sub-Inspector or the Bench,- ofwhat was the real ojfence against the law and the prime cause" of the assault. I mean* the fact of the Provincial Hotel being kept open for the sale of liquors after its licensed hours—lo. p.m. Constable Baldwin went in and cleared the place at half-past eleven. In so doing he was performing his duty. For thus doing^his duty Host: Williams assaulted hint\«nd the Bench marked its sense of the strong done by inflicting a fine of £10., ,j3at was there no further duty for the police to perform in this case? Is there no penalty attached to the breaking of the law by. selling liquor after licensed hours? Be good enough to-inforra me on this point. I expected to see that the police bad summoned both Hosts Williams and Vaughan for "this illegal keeping" of their houses open after hours. I have watched your paper each day since the 3rd inst, but there has been no sign from the police.—l am, &c, . - Obsebveb.
