Cr Spencer seconded the -motion. He was glad it was proposed, as it was time the Eace was completed, when it would bring in a large revenue. Carried. . THAMES AND WAIKATO EAILWAT. Cr Spender moved the notice of motion standing in Ms name —" That in view of the increasing population and traffic in the Ohinemuri and other district's, the Government should be repectfufly urged to commence the surrey of the Grahamsstqwn to Omahu portion of the Thames and.Waikato railway with as little delay as possible,." , He said that the object was a very * important one. They were, much indebted to the Chairman for his , vigilance in conjunction with the Mayor in having the line put on.the Public Works Statement. He confessed that they were somewhat dumfouhded when they found out the railway wai to be made from Hamilton to Thames, meaning Thames river, and was glad the Chairman was there to have it rectified. The engineering difficulties were not very great, the greatest, he believed, being the ' bridging of the Kauaeran'ga. A great many of the unemployed might get work on this section. Gr Thorburn seconded the motion, and in doing so, heartily endorsed Cr Spencer's eulogy on the Chairman's energy while at Wellington. ' The motion was then carried. . LANDS FOB SETTLEMENT. At the suggestion of the Chairman, Cr Coutts moved, and it was carried—" That the Government be respectfully urged to place the newly-acquired blocks of land in the Thames district in the hands of the Waste Lands Eoard, with a recommendation that a portion "of such lands be offered, under the system of .deferredpayments." . • . The Chairman said that tbe works contained in these resolutions might be termed the public works policy of fhe Thames County for the ensuing 12 months. On his return from Wellington he found great depression here, but when these works were commenced a great -.portion of the surplus labor, would be fgibaprbed. The completion of the waterrace would use the skilled labor, and the expenditure in it would bear fruit, as when the race was completed more revenue'would accrue to the Council. The construction of the railway, and the set' tlementof the people on lands under the deferred payment system, if carried on gimultaneonsly' would remove *he causes which brought about these recurring periods of depression, and commence a new era of prosperity for the district.
