CELEBRATION OF 21 VICTORY OF ALFRED THE GREAT.
Some thourands of persons assembled on Wednesday at Wedmore, a pleasantly situated parish near Wells, to celebrate the proclamation of peace which took place in that parish one thousand years ago, when the Danes, under the leadership of Gothrura, were repulsed at the Battle of Edingworth by the army of Alfred the Great. The proceedings commenced with Divine service, at which the Bishop of Bath apd Wells preached a sermon descriptive of the event the thousandth anniversary of which they that day celebrated. His lordship subse* quently planted a memorial yew tree in the churchyard. At a public meeting held in the afternoon addresses' were delivered by Bishop Clifford, Professors Earl, King, and Da wkins, an d others. It was stated that prior to the signing of the treaty between Alfred and Gothrum the latter was baptised in the (Christian faith in the church of Alter, a few miles distant from Wedmore. The identical font in which he was christened, it is said, is still in Alter Church. A luncheon followed, under the presidency of the bishop. Mr Freeman was amongst the guests, but was prevented from speaking through indisposition. A public tea and outdoor amusements completed the programmeStandard, Aug. 9.
