Thursday. I The 6.10 a.m. train today from Palmerston, on arming in the neighborhood of Bowley bridge, near Coal Point, and on going round the curze and down the heavy gradient there, ran into an engine and truck, on their way to Palmerston, conveying Oamaru stone. The truck had" got off tiie line, and it is stated that warning was given to the approaching train from Palmerston. Jenkins, the fireman of the lattei* train, jumped off, and was not much hurt, though he felt internal pains. White, the engine driver of the same train, sustained a simple fracture four or five inches below ,the knee. He was attended by Dr. Brown, of Palmerston, and was afterwards conveyed to the Oamaru hospital. It appears that the goods train 'from Oatjaru was late, and that one of the waggous breaking down caused further detention. The sta*ion-nuster at Palmerston, without waiting the arrival of this train, started the passenger train for Oamaru at the usual hour, thinking the goods train would run into oce of the sidings, and the accident happened five minutes after the departure of the passenger train from Oumaru, which did not arrive till 3 p.m., in consequence pi the accident. The damage to the engines is not so great as was at first expected. The breaking of tae buffer of one of the engines, and damaging of buffers of two waggons,'were the only injuries sustained. The plant for the dredging contract will be considered by a special meeting of the Harbor Board to-morrow.
This afternoon a deputation waited on Mr Uathgate, K.M., and presented him with an influential and numerously signed address,, expressing sympathy with him in consequence of his.conduct on the bench having been recently called in question. Mr Bathgate thanked the deputation, and said whatever difference of opinion had prevailed was due to the misapprehension. He would continue to discharge his duty without fear or affection, and would endeavor to remain pleasant with the legal profession and all who would have business in Court. . An Inquest on White, who was killed in Guthrie and Larnach's factory, was held, and a verdict of " Accidental death " returned. '■'..'. . • To-day Andrew Seed was fined £50 for sly grog selling.
