Thames Harbor Board.
A 'special meeting of this body was held j at the Council Chambers ye»terday afternoon. Present: The Chairman, Mayor,! Messrs Mennie, Bpencer, Price,. Bagnall; and Wilsqn v .'.'.:.[',, ■'/■ ,''.,"J\ ,'.<!;'> " ! The Chairman explained the object of the meeting. The Borough Council were j anxious, to. know if the t Harbor, Board j 'could giye, employment to, some, of thej men out of work!. The Borough had; over fifty men employed, but it was only! at scraping about and cleaning out ditches, \ and did not get value; for the, money. ex-1 pended; The Cotncil^knowing that .the! Harbor Board could beneficially employ] men on permanent works j wished to advance money to the Harbor Board to 1 carry out works, and *he Board could* pay the Council when they: cor ,'d. The Mayor spoke strongly in favor of the proposal. Mr Spencer said he supposed one of; the works would be the levelling of the mullock tips. # : Mr Bagnall said that they might not be able to repay the money, as all the present revenue was anticipated. The Mayor'pointed out that they were j not asked tp give security. ' : \Tlie Chairman said that this matter; was to be discussed at the Borough Council meeting to morrow night. * . • Tho Mayor moved, that if the Borough* are disposed to grant the Board a sum of money for harbor works, and employ the: men out of work, the Board will accept it.-! Mr Mennie seconded. Carried. ] The Chairman said that something might be done in dredging, but not for a while, as the silting works were not sufficiently advanced. The most advantageous work would be filling up under the Burke* street wharf, as it would save them a lot of mon^y. ! Mr Price suggested that Albert street wharf be dismantled, and used to extend the net works to Shortland. ' • j The secretary read a letter from Major. Murray suggesting, with reference to the proposed parade ground, thai a comprehensive scheme of filling in the foreshore be started. ■ ■ ".■■■■■:,. '■■; ■■. ;■ ./■- ■■■ ,■ : ■■ \ The Mayor moved that the Chairman .and Messrs Price and Mennie be a committee to carry out the works, and that the first work be the filling under the Goods Wharf. ' ' The Clfirman was then appointed tp meet the Borough Council to-night concerning the employment of the unemployed. This was all the business.
