At the request'pf the Corporation theChamber of Commerce held 'a general meeting to-day, with a view of cooperating in tin? celebration of railway communication .between Wellington and Wairarapa. It is understood the celebration will take the form of a dinner and ball, to which Wairai'iipa'-'viuiiors and members of the. General Assembly will be invited. The. Chamber subscribed £50 from its hinds, while £100 beside.s was subscribed privately by members of the Chamber. A public meeting will be held to-night with' the same object.- ■ The Undenviitera' Association report, undev date London, September 20th, the arrival of the ship Chili from Auckland, and the Mendoza from Tiinaru.

A public meeting, convened by the Mayor, was held to-night for the purpose of getting up .a, celebration to commemorate the opening of the railway to Wairarapa. Three resolutions were carried deciding that the demonstration should consist'of a ball and supper, with, a treat for all the school children of the city. A guaranteed fand of three hundred pounds has already been secured, with a considerable sum promised.
