THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O' CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1878.

Since ten o'clock this morning a notice has-been] posted at the Borough Council Chambers notifying all men out of work and seeking employment to present themselves to the Foreman of Works at a quarter to eight o'clock to-morrow morning, when they will be furnished with work. This notice had been disregarded up to three o'clock to-day, not a single individual having put in an appearance to ask any particulars aa to the nature of the work to be given. This, coupled with the fiasco of Saturday last, warrants the assumption that a great deal more has been made of the unemployed cry than was justified by actual circumstances. Out of the insignificant number that responded to the invitation of the Borough on Saturday, half a dozen men put down their names on the list of those anxious, to leave the district, and a few others agreed to accept the work that might be given to them. The County authorities have also provided work for persons offering themselves, and if the present weather should continue, road-making may very well'be' undertaken as well as stone-breaking. We trust Iherefore we shall hear very little more of the cry that work is scarce, for it is even-now plain that the number first represented as being out of work was greatly overaated.
